2025 Eastbound Trip 1 - Day 22

June 20, 2025

I started the day with another run.  This cemetery thing as a destination seems to work as it sends me in a different direction on each run letting me explore anew area of this community.  From the map software, I saw that there were two large cement raises not far from here, the St. George which is associated with the Serbian Orthodox Church and, next door, the Beth Abraham-Shaare Zeseck-Marks Jewish Cemeteries.  While I appreciate the cultural differences, I am somewhat amused that some people are concerned who their remains reside by for eternity.

I headed out and quickly found that the route the navigation app had me on needed to change as the lack of a sidewalk or even a shoulder on Glenbury Street just wasn’t safe.  I took a street parallel to it, Groveland.  And, yes, there are hills.

Near the bottom of the hill the road wrapped back around to Glenbury but I avoided that with some stairs.

This took me under the train tracks to the intersection with Saw Mill and Library roads.

It took a while for my “Walk” light to give me the go ahead but I made it through the intersection and found another hill to climb, with more stairs.

When I got the end of the road, the back gate to St. George was chained and marked with “No Tresspassing” so I turned around and looped through some other streets to the entry entry of the Jewish cemetery.

While I know that sites like this can be a downer, I am fascinated by the stories that each of the graves can tell.  I spent some time walking a loop through the whole place.  Some photos…

I took a different route back to that busy intersection.

I went past a house on Parklyn St. that I’d seen on Zillow.  It’s very nice, 3 BR, 3 BA, 1,312 SF with a detached single garage and a large yard, mostly flat.  $254,900.

It’s pretty typical of what homes go for around here.

I continued on and went past this place with lots of yard art.

It was great outing and I saw lots of new things in the area.

After that it cool down, shower, breakfast, and then kick back, reading and working on a drawing.

In there early afternoon I proposed that we do a real touristy thing:  go ride the Duquesne Incline.

There used to be over a dozen of these incline rails in the city that would transport working to and from the mills that were along the river to where they lived in the hills about.  There are two left and this one looked like fun.

We drove there in about a 15-minute ride, parked, and then walked up to the overpass that led to the station.  A few pictures while we waited the 10-minutes.

Inside the station, we bought 2-round trip tickets for a total of $10 and waited for the next car to arrive.

We loaded up and I grabbed a shot of the tracks.

There are two tracks and two cars, each being pulled up and down the hill with cables.  The view inside the car.

The other car was going down as we were going up.

I grabbed a shot as we were getting off.

We went out on the upper station’s observation deck to take in the view of Pittsburgh.

Next, we took a walk to enjoy the nice weather and to get other views of the city.

Then it was back to the station for our ride down.

After that, we retrieved out car and then toured the Southside Flats neighborhood, during the length of Carson Street.  This area is seeing some gentrification and shadows some real possibilities but the most common businesses are tattoo shops, vape shops, and bars.

We followed the Monongahela River eastward for a while before turning west and into the West Mifflin area.  We worked our way west and arrived back to where we are staying safe and sound.
