Day 7 - the Road to Mexico

Augusts 15, 2021

Dan and I hit the road about 8am.  We had to run by his work where his riding boots were and that took us through downtown Pittsburgh.  Since it was a Sunday morning there was no traffic so it was a joy scooting around a big city with no obstacles.

I set up the Google maps thing to take us to Oswego, New York and to not use any highways.  What I learned is that the app will reroute without explanation and I thought we were heading through the Allegheny forest and through the Finger Lakes but we ended up heading north to Jamestown, NY and then to the east to miss Rochester and then to Oswego.  No problem since I don’t have specific roads I want to ride and I just want back roads with curves.  We got plenty of them.  Dan explained that it's best to set waypoints on the route to keep the nav software from rerouting on its own,

Like the other day, it wasn’t really a picture taking day but we did stop a few times and I pulled out the phone for a few shots.  Here’s some exciting ones at gas stations.

Then, somewhere down the road, after we entered New York, I told Dan we needed to pull over for a dedicated photo stop.

Is that a great looking road?

We pretty much covered ground the rest of the way.  Dan had a deer run across in front of him which was a highlight but he avoided a collision.  We went past a car show in some small town and I saw a Volvo 544 like mine on the road.  We stopped at a Subway in Ellicottville, NY where they were having a “Taste of Ellicottville” festival and the Main Street was packed as were the sidewalks.

We worked our way north and eventually arrived in Oswego, a city on Lake Ontario. I hadn’t been here in over 40-years back when I was stationed at Camp Drum, outside of Watertown, NY.  We took a break and I got on the phone looking for campgrounds.  After finding no luck in state parks along the lake I called the  J & J Campground in Mexico, NY and they said they had plenty of tent sites.  30 minutes later were were there.  A really nice place.  It felt good to relax.

It was a 385 mile day.
